Yoga and Meditation

Yoga simply means Union. We practice Yoga and Meditation to become United with all that is. When we are United with the flow of things then life is no longer a struggle and it becomes joyful, blissful and easy. The way to this Unification is through the transcendence of “I, Me and Mine.” When we are able at any time to transcend the illusion of the primary importance of our personal agendas and the personal self. When we are able to silence our internal dialogues, and connect with the voice of Truth and Love, then all of our behaviors, rather than being Emotionally Reactive become Loving Responses to all of Existence.

The physical aspects of Yoga, the asanas, were created to bring the body into a state of optimum health and wellness so that this state of Union, of Meditation, or Samadi, can become an integral part of ones ongoing life.

The principal activity of The Way of Atsumi is the daily practice of the one-hour Atsumi Morning Meditation Ritual. We perform this ritual at the center from 7.00 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. each morning in the open air to maximize the renewal of our Life Force. The ritual consists of four, twenty minute segments, and is a way of renewing our Body, Mind and Spirit and ‘Re-minding’ ourselves back on the path of Love, Peace, Creativity and Joy.
The Morning Ritual is an excellent daily resourcing strategy and in addition a full Traditional Yoga class of  90 to 120 minutes, two or three times a week is also highly recommended.

The Atsumi Healing Ritual
Self ThaiAtsu: 20 Minutes.
Traditional Yoga Asanas: 20 Minutes
The Five-Element Ki Kung Set: 20 Minutes
Sitting Meditation: 20 Minutes. Total 80min.

Self ThaiAtsu: 20 Minutes.
Self ‘ThaiAtsu’ is a series of rigorous percussive ‘wake up release’ exercises. We stimulate a number of acupressure points on the Body as well as stimulation the Energy Channels to disperse any blockages in the Body-Mind, which enables the Atsumi Ki (Life force) to flow in the Channels or Meridians of the Body.

Traditional Yoga Asanas: 20 Minutes
In this second section we practice some of the traditional Yoga postures or asanas in the Hatha Yoga style.

The Five-Element Ki Kung Set: 20 Minutes
In this third section of the Ritual, which is a contemplative exercise, we learn and practice a series of five movements that correspond to the Five Elements of the Traditional Chinese Medical Model. The benefits are immediate in as much that the experience of ‘Ki Raising’ can be perceived, Each movement is used as an affirmation of a positive attitude or “Characteristic of Unconditional Love,” which are Motivation, Gratitude, Compassion, Adaptability, and Tranquility. With the practice of each movement, we also remind ourselves of “The Five Warning Emotions.” These are the first indicators that tell us that we are about to lose our center. They are Irritability, Hastiness, Inconsideration, Neediness, and Unease.

Sitting Meditation: 20 Minutes.
Once the Body is awake, the Mind is alert, in a positive frame, and the “Ki” is raised and flowing. We then sit and practice further internal techniques that can and usually very quickly do, lead to a Meditative state. Totally different to the previous segment, where we use the mind to think and imagine something, which is a “contemplative” technique. In the true Meditative state, the mind is no more. To bring the mind to “one pointedness,” we may focus on the breath (Tactile sense) and/or make use of a mantra (Auditory sense) or focus on a light, a Mandela or candle or use internal visualizations (Visual sense). Thoughts will inevitably arise as we take the position of the ‘watcher’ or ‘witness’ of these mind processes and thus we create an internal stillness of the senses. By allowing this ‘stillness’ the illusion of our separateness from Existence is seen for what it is, just an illusion. In this metaphysical state we are privy to “The Divine Idea” or “Universal Wisdom,” which is a state of being, that transcends all language and all knowing as we become one with the unknowable. The paradox is that in this state of non-achievement much is achieved. The transcendence of ‘Who we are’ becomes a transcendence of the five senses, which in turn is a transcendence of the Mind, and the personality with all its problems, judgments and limitations. In a true Meditative state we are reunited with Truth and Unconditional Love. Then life rather than being a problematic struggle becomes a joyful flow in a state of non-attachment and a celebration of creativity and being.

“Your thinking has nothing to do with your Beingness. You are part of the great I AM, which transcends your thinking. My daughter you must learn how to think less so that you can just Be”

The Benefits of Meditation.

The benefits of Meditation go far beyond any from of endeavor where the “self” is being improved upon for in Meditation the concept of the self as a separate “thing” to the rest of Existence is transcended. It is not that in living a Meditative life we do not do, or have anything. We do things and have things, the material world goes on, but slowly through the practice of Meditation we are able to create a personal reality where we are “living in the material world, while being firmly rooted in our Spiritual source.”
We are able to look at life as a process of giving, sharing and maintaining and caring for all of Existence. And when the cycle of things, situations, people and relationships naturally concludes, we are able to ‘let go’ without suffering. Thus eventually with a sustained Spiritual Practice, we are able to transcend all Emotional states and Reactions and are able to ‘Walk the middle path’ and ‘ Live in the Circle of Love’ at all times, happily Responding to life’s challenges with Love and Truth.

To purify the mind and prevent it from usurping it’s correct function.
To prevent it’s destructive wandering activities and to create inner-peace and tranquility.
To become centered and increase ones ability to lovingly Respond to life’s challenges.
To have a healthy, harmonious, and active Body-Mind-Spirit-Feeling-Continuum, thus having greater intelligence, self and social confidence.
To eliminate attachment, emotional reactions and thus all suffering.
To realize the Truth that all things are impermanent.
To be in harmony with ‘All that is’ and to be less likely to attract disasters, accidents, and misfortune.
To be of benefit to all beings, all life, and all of Existence.
To live happily in this present lifetime and to age and die gracefully, with dignity and peace.

“Since the unknown past, being conditioned by their own deeds and deluded by two fundamental misconceptions, people have wandered about in ignorance. The first misconception is that they believe that the discriminating mind is their true nature and the second is that they do not know that hidden behind the discriminating mind they possess a pure and enlightened mind or state of “no mind” which is their true nature.”
